Every year Key West events attract thousands of people. Artists, sportsmen and sportswomen, motorcycle enthusiasts, thrillseekers, luminaries – no matter what category you fit into, there’s an event for everyone that makes the trip even more worthwhile. For residents, they get the benefit of choosing which ones they want to enjoy, like living around the corner from Disney World with a different amusement park every week.
One of the most notable Key West events is Key West Poker Run. This is a motorcycle rally with all the enthusiasm of a trip to Sturgis. For 4 days in September, all of lower Duval is shut down to host the droves of chopper, crotch rockets, cruisers and dirt bikes that thunder into town for a good time. And best of all, most of the riders are a great bunch with a lot of respect for the residents.
Then there’s the Super Boat International Race series. Every November a fleet of the world’s fastest powerboats arrive on our shores to test their mettle in a feat of raw speed. Crowds of fans fill the beaches and boardwalks of Key West along the channel between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico to watch the only machines in town faster than the local F-18s scream across the waves.
And in the heat of Summer, a man in a white beard is all the rage. No, it’s not Christmas in July. It’s Hemingway Days, a celebration of author Ernest Hemingway, his legacy and his era. This event draws crowds during the day for streetside arts, at night for exciting music and concerts, and a well known competition to see who looks the most like Hemingway himself.
While guests stay in town they often lodge in Key West’s B&B’s or a vacation cottage. It gives them a flavor of what it’s like to live in a house of their own in Key West. It’s not unusual to get a call from someone who says, “I started coming to Key West for ‘X event’ years ago, and now I’m moving there.” It really is the trip of a lifetime, every time.
